First Congregational Church (FCC), stands as both a landmark and a living story. For nearly 170 years, its presence has shaped the rhythm of the downtown community, its grand architecture and historic designation mark it as a place of permanence even as the world around it has changed. Step inside, and the space tells its own story: the glow of stained glass (including a beloved Tiffany window,) the majesty of the organ, and the echo of carillon chimes drift into the streets. It feels, unmistakably, like a “grand church”, but one with an unexpected warmth. FCC’s history has not been without challenge. A devastating fire in 1973, periods of internal strain, and fluctuations in membership and financial stability have all shaped its journey. Still, we have endured, carried forward by generations of committed members and a legacy of strong music leadership and community engagement. Looking ahead, we seek a pastoral leader who reflects and strengthens our core identity, builds authentic relationships, brings energy and emotional steadiness, and fosters a sense of shared mission. Equally important is a collaborative spirit. We value a pastor who works alongside members, planning worship in advance, partnering with the Music Director, and helping the church grow both spiritually and practically. This is someone who understands the importance of communication, embraces tools like social media and newsletters, and sees the church not just as a place of worship, but as a hub for connection for the congregation and community. Our hope is not simply to maintain what it has been, but to re-energize what it can become. We aim to be more visible, more connected, and more responsive to the needs of our surrounding community. We seek to be known not only as a historic downtown church, but as a vibrant, welcoming presence, and one that invites people in, meets them where they are, and offers a sense of belonging. |
