Annual vacation is to include 30 days including 4 Sundays. Job Description
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Minister of the Word and Sacrament shall in all things be committed to teaching the faith in
word and deed and equipping the saints for the work of ministry. They shall preach and teach the
faith of the church, so that the people are shaped by the pattern of the gospel and strengthened
for witness and service. They shall interpret and “show forth” the mysteries of grace in word and
action through service at font and table, lifting the people’s vision toward the hope of God’s new
creation. They shall support the people in the disciplines of the faith amid the struggles of daily
life. When they serve as presbyters, they shall participate in the responsibilities of governance,
seeking always to discern the mind of Christ and to build up Christ’s body through devotion,
debate, and decision. (Book of Order, G-2.0501)
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Ordained to service as a Minister of the Word and Sacrament in the PC(USA).
a. Master of Divinity from an accredited Presbyterian Church (USA) theological
seminary.
b. Member of the Presbytery of Carlisle
c. Provide a Criminal Background Check/Child Abuse Clearance to the Presbytery
of Carlisle
2. Support and continued discernment of the Purpose, Vision, and Values of the
McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church.
RESPONSIBILITIES (adapted from G-2.0504)
• Maintain a quality of life that commends the gospel to all persons and that communicates
its joy and justice.
• Study, teach, and preach the Word.
o Serve as the primary weekly worship leader.
o Ensure Bible Study, book club, and Sunday School are offered on a regular basis.
o Ensure confirmation class, youth group, vacation Bible school, new members’
classes, etc. are offered when appropriate.
o Participate in some form of continuing education at least once a year.
• Celebrate Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, as determined by the session.
• Pray with and for the congregation.
• Discern God’s continued activity within, around, and beyond MUPC.
• Serve as the Moderator of Session.
• Serve alongside the ruling elders to:
o Encourage people in the worship and service of God;
o Equip and enable people for the tasks within the church and their mission in the
world;
o Exercise pastoral care, devoting special attention to the poor, the sick, the
troubled, and the dying;
o Participate in governing responsibilities, including leadership of the congregation
in:
▪ implementing the principles of participation and inclusiveness in the
decision-making life of the congregation
▪ reaching out in concern and service to the life of the human community.
• Serve alongside the deacons to:
o Share in the ministries of compassion, witness, and service.
• Serve alongside the trustees to:
o Maintain responsible use of the properties of the church, including scheduling
building use with outside groups.
• Share in the ministry of the church in the councils higher than the session and in
ecumenical relationships.
• Conduct training for ruling elders, deacons, and trustees once a year.
